GENEALOGICAL NOTES FOR NAOMI FROM GRANDPA DICK:
(written 8/5/02, when you were still in Mommy's tummy!)
Your great-great paternal grandfather, Paul Tracy
Carpenter, was born on July 30, 1869 in Groton, NY, married Lena Rose Tubbs in
Binghamton, NY, on August 10, 1899, and died in Cortland, NY, on April 13, 1955.
He practiced medicine in Cortland all his life, having graduated from the
Baltimore Medical School in MD. Great-great-grandmother Lena was born in Newark
Valley, NY on May 27, 1873, and died in Cortland on October 4, 1967, when your
Daddy was one year old. He never met them.
Paul and Lena had three children, Thelma Elizabeth, born November 6, 1902, Paul
Tracy, Jr., born September 24, 1906, and Robert Putnam Carpenter, born December
14, 1907, all in Cortland. Your great Aunt Thelma, whom your Daddy met in
Cortland and Santa Fe, married Gilbert Congdon in 1931, divorced him in 1940 and
remarried him in 1978; she died in Cortland in the Eighties. Paul died in
Cortland on December 24, 1907, as an infant.
Your great-grandfather, Grandpa Dick's dad and Daddy's paternal grandfather, graduated from Hamilton College and the U. of Rochester Medical School and practiced medicine all his life in Cortland, the last several years using the same offices in which his father had practiced medicine. He played the trombone, played high school and college football, and was an avid sports fan. He was also the school doctor at times for the Cortland Public Schools and what is now SUNY at Cortland (then the Cortland Normal School for teachers). He married Sylvia Frances Norris on June 16, 1933, in Silver Creek, NY. Sylvia, Grandpa Dick's mother, was born on June 16, 1909, probably in Rochester, where she was adopted by Frank Norris, who made stone benches and grave markers in Rochester; my father met her when he was at medical school. She was a typical unemancipated housewife in her time. Great grandfather Carpenter died on December 2, 1974, and great grandmother Sylvia died on August 17, 1978, both in Cortland. Your Daddy met his paternal grandparents twice in Cortland and once in Florida.
Your great uncle (grandpa Dick's brother), Peter Tracy Carpenter, was born on March 29, 1934, in Rochester, NY. He graduated from Syracuse University and taught and was an administrator in the State College, PA, public school system. He married Marguerite Bonacci, who was born August 22, 1937, in Liverpool, NY, on July 2, 1960. Marge attended SUNY at Cortland and taught in State College elementary schools. Both are now retired. They have three children, all graduates from Penn State.
Your cousin, Thomas Bryant Carpenter, was born on September 21, 1964 in Cortland NY. On July 23, 1994, in Erie, PA, he married Laura Kozab, who was born on March 5, 1967 in Pittsburgh, PA. Tom is an attorney and Laura is a nurse. They have two children. Nicholas Bryant Carpenter was born on January 2, 1997, in Wilkes Barre, PA, and Matthew Peter Carpenter was born on January 22, 2000, in Willow Grove, PA. They live in Willow Grove, PA.
Your cousin, Tracy Elizabeth Carpenter, was born on January 20, 1966, in Cortland, and on December 30, 1989, in State College, married Rodney Milan Sepich, who was born on July 28, 1966 in Cabot, PA. She is a doctor of optometry and he is orthopedic surgeon. They have four children. Paul Milan Sepich was born on October 28, 1995; Joseph Peter Sepich was born October 21, 1998; and Luke Carpenter Sepich and Ann Katherine Sepich were born on October 2, 1999; all were born in Titusville, PA. They live in Oil City, PA.
Your cousin, Maria Beth Carpenter, was born on March 1, 1969, in Syracuse, NY, and in State College, PA, on September 3, 1994, she married Mark Ribeiro, who was born on June 16, 1969. She is a physician assistant and he works in computers. They live in Vienna, VA.
Your great aunt (grandpa Dick's sister), Lynne Elizabeth Carpenter, was born in Cortland on September 12, 1940, and married Bruce Massey in Cortland on November 27, 1971; Bruce was born on August 16, 1922, in Raleigh, NC. She graduated from SUNY at Cortland and taught in NY and FL elementary schools until her retirement. They live in Nokimis, FL.
Your paternal granddad, Richard Norris Carpenter, was born in Cortland on February 14, 1937. He, like your dad, was the salutatorian of his high school class, where he was editor of the school newspaper among other activities. He played the saxophone in the high school band. In 1955, when he graduated from high school, he was a youth delegate to a world YMCA conference in Paris. He attended Syracuse University on a New York State Regents scholarship and a journalism scholarship, from which he graduated magna cum laude in three years. He then received a LL.B from Yale University and also was a Rotary Foundation Fellow in Pakistan, 1959-60, where he widely traveled in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan. Your paternal grandparents were married on August 26, 1961. Following his practice of law on Wall Street, grandpa Dick joined his then father-in-law's law firm in Santa Fe in 1963 and your grandparents built and lived in a home next to your dad's maternal grandparents' home (your great grandparents Bigbee). Granddad Dick practiced law with your great-grandfather until your great-grandfather retired many years after daddy's parents were divorced in 1975. Grandpa Dick likes to travel abroad and has been to more than 30 countries, including visiting Daddy twice when he was studying at Oxford. Grandpa Dick has been active in several Santa Fe and New Mexico civic functions, including 20 years on the St. Vincent Hospital board of directors, several terms as chair, where Daddy was born (and operated on several times), and three years on the Santa Fe Preparatory School board of directors, two terms as chair, from which Daddy graduated; he gave a commencement address there when Dad graduated. On July 20, 1991, he married Jane Leslie Nordby, following an extensive remodeling and expansion of your Daddy’s childhood home. Grandpa Dick retired on April 1, 2002 from 40 years of law, his career being professionally recognized in The Best Lawyers in America (dually for public utility law and natural resources law), Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in the West. In retirement, he continues his charitable activities, plays tennis almost daily in good weather (of which Santa Fe has lots) and is pursuing, but not nearly with the skill, intelligence and experience of your father, his computer education. He enjoys his Santa Fe step-grandchildren and promises to hug and nourish Naomi A BUNCH.
Grandma Leslie, Jane Leslie Carpenter, was born on September 9, 1946, in New Orleans, LA. She graduated from the U. of Colorado and has graduate degrees in education from the U. of New Mexico, where she is completing her Ph.D. dissertation. She has taught elementary schools in Boulder, CO, and in Santa Fe. She was principal of two Santa Fe public elementary schools and retired as assistant superintendent of Santa Fe Public Schools. She is currently an educational consultant and teaches at the university level; she is also president of a charter middle and high school. She and Grandpa Dick live in Santa Fe, NM.
Grandma Leslie has two children of a prior marriage. Your uncle, Todd Christopher Nordby, was born in Boulder, CO, on December 13, 1966 and is a graduate of the University of New Mexico.
