Welcome to the homepage of Andrew N. Carpenter. I live in Westminster, MD, with my wife Becky and our daughter Naomi.

I am a professional philosopher whose academic specialty is the history of early modern philosophy. My Ph.D. is from the University of California at Berkeley; I also have degrees in philosophy from the University of Oxford and Amherst College. I am an expert in online education, am an active researcher, and am an award-winning educator with significant expertise in faculty self-governance, institutional and program accreditation, academic policy, continuous quality improvement, strategic planning, faculty development, and the assessment of student learning. I have served in numerous faculty leadership roles and perform accreditation work for the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.

I love online teaching and learning, and have taught with technology for fifteen years. Since 2001, I have devoted 100% of my teaching time to exclusively online classes. I currently serve as professor of philosophy at Ellis College of the New York Institute of Technology; my previous academic appointments include professor in Kaplan University's graduate programs, chair of Kaplan's humanities department, and head of Antioch College's interdisciplinary history, philosophy, and religious studies area.

Ellis College is an online institution of higher learning that is particularly noted for its focus on constructivist pedagogy, technical innovation, and the quality and integrity of its educational programs. It was named one of the top ten online institutions in the 2007 Best and Worst Online Degree Programs global ranking and was also named as one of the top distance learning and online MBA providers by the Financial Times.

My personal life is marked by my marriage to Rebecca Carpenter, an associate professor of English at McDaniel College, and by our raising of our daughter, Naomi Ruth Carpenter. Becky and I enjoy competitive ballroom dancing and appreciate the way that Naomi thrives from the love of many devoted family members. My other interests include digital photography, coffee roasting, public speaking, and reading science fiction and contemporary British literature.

If you would like to know more about me, you can read my academic vitae,  linkedin profile, plaxo profile, friend feed, or twitter stream. The full-text of my doctoral dissertation is here.
